Today is going to be an exciting day for the digital junkies of New York. SocialMediaCamp New York kicks off at 10am. Social Media Camp is an un-conference. People show up, brave souls sign up to lead a discussion, and then the attendees vote to determine which topic gets discussed. So right off the bat you know this won’t be a typical conference. The plan is a slight departure from PodCampBoston which featured pre-determined discussion topics with a focus on serendipitous hallway discussion.

David Berkowitz is going to lead a discussion on Navigating Startup-Agency-Marketer Relationships. I think the sleeper hit will end up being Thomas Lowenhaupt’s discussion on City based Social Media. I use social media to connect to gamers and tech junkies online. We share a passion and that ties us together. I rarely consider how social networking on a regional level would work. I think a New York based social network would humanize some of our experiences in the city. Case in point: Subway rides. I encounter hundreds of people in the tunnels everyday but I rarely interact with any of them. Maybe City based social media can work to change the way we look at each other on the trains every morning.

Summer Mash New York City

Summer Mash is part of Mashable’s US Summer 2008 Tour. It’s a party. I plan on having a good time. Let me know if you’ll be attending any of these events. I’ll be on twitter!
